↑ Rising The tide is rising. 2 h 55 min to high tide at 8:52 pm.
Tide coefficient 84 for the 9:44 am high tide and 83 for the 8:52 pm high tide. Average coefficient. The water rises and falls 3.2 ft between the highest high and the lowest low: a large range for this place. 70 is an average tide here; 90 and above means spring tides; below 45, neap tides. What is the tide coefficient?
2026 extremes: the highest tide of the year is on October 28 (3.1 ft) and the lowest, on January 3 (-0.7 ft).
Mixed: two high and two low tides a day, but of quite different heights.
Heights above mean lower low water (MLLW), the zero of US nautical charts. Astronomical prediction: wind and air pressure can raise or lower the water by a few inches, and more in a storm. Not for navigation. MLLW
Tide coefficient and range in October
The biggest tides of the month came from October 26 to 28 (coefficient 86, 3.2 ft range). The smallest, from October 17 to 19 (coefficient 44, 1.9 ft).

Where this tide comes from
Monte Cristo has no station of its own, so we use the tide at Massacre (NOAA), 12 mi away. On the open coast the difference is usually a few minutes and inches; inside estuaries, rivers and enclosed bays it can be much larger. It is a NOAA subordinate station: its times and heights come from the San Juan reference station with the official corrections.

One wave in seven is higher than the significant height, and about 3 times a day one reaches 3.2 ft. Before heading out, expect waves of up to 3.2 ft.
Wind on the coast and offshore
Cross-onshore wind. The coast faces northwest and the wind comes in from the sea at an angle: a bit more surf at the shore and drift along the coast, toward land.

Waves stay much the same all week. The biggest waves arrive on Saturday 31: 1.8 ft with a period of 5 s, from the northeast (slight).

For fishing, swimming and diving
- Shore fishing. Shallow, gradual bottom (16 ft at 0.95 mi): cast far from the beach and fish the high tide, when there is more water close in.
- Swimming. A very gentle way in with plenty of shallow water, good for kids. At low tide the water can be far out.
- Diving. Shallow near shore: you only reach 33 ft at 1.6 mi. For dives deeper than 33 ft, go by boat.
Rough estimate: here the data comes in cells of about 0.3 mi and misses details near shore (rocks, sandbars, small coves). The profile is turned slightly from the coast so it does not run into an island or a headland.
