Sunrise, sunset, twilight and golden hour explained

Sunrise and sunset
The moment the upper edge of the sun appears or disappears on the horizon. It is calculated for a flat horizon at sea level, including atmospheric refraction, which lifts the image of the sun slightly: that is why we see it rise a couple of minutes before it is really above the horizon.
Golden hour
When the sun is less than 6° above the horizon, just after sunrise and before sunset. The light is warm and soft, with long shadows: a favorite with photographers.
Civil twilight
From sunset until the sun is 6° below the horizon (and the same before sunrise). There is plenty of light to be outdoors without artificial light. Its end is what we usually call dusk.
Nautical twilight
With the sun 6° to 12° below the horizon. The brightest stars are out and the horizon at sea can still be made out. Its start is first light in the morning, and its end is full dark.
Astronomical twilight
With the sun 12° to 18° below the horizon. To the eye it looks like night, but the sky is not completely dark yet. After that, it is full night.
Solar noon
The moment the sun is highest in the sky. It rarely falls at 12:00 on the clock: it depends on where you are within your time zone, on daylight saving time and on the time of year.

Why daylight hours change through the year

The Earth’s axis is tilted about 23.4° to its orbit. For half of the year the northern hemisphere leans slightly toward the sun: days are longer than nights and the sun climbs higher. For the other half, the opposite happens. In the southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed.

The farther from the equator, the more the length of the day changes. At the equator there are about 12 hours of daylight all year; beyond the polar circles there are days when the sun never sets and others when it never rises.

The change from one day to the next is not the same all year either: it is largest around the equinoxes, in March and September (several minutes a day at mid-latitudes), and almost zero around the solstices, in June and December. At the equinoxes, the day lasts a little over 12 hours everywhere on Earth.

Daylight saving time does not change the hours of daylight, but it moves the clock forward one hour: the sun rises and sets one hour later by the clock.

Frequently asked questions

What time is sunset today?

It depends on the place and the date. Today, for example, the sun sets at 6:03 pm in Philadelphia and at 5:30 pm in Thessaloníki, local time. To see it for where you are, choose “Use my location” or type the coordinates of the place into the calculator.

How long does it stay light after sunset?

Until the end of civil twilight. Near the equator that comes about 20 to 25 minutes after sunset; at mid-latitudes, like Spain or the central United States, about 30 minutes; and in northern Europe in summer it can take more than an hour. The calculator shows it as “Dusk”.

When is golden hour?

Right after sunrise and before sunset, while the sun is less than 6° above the horizon. At mid-latitudes it usually lasts between half an hour and an hour, depending on the time of year. The calculator gives the morning and evening golden hour for any day.

How accurate are these times?

They are accurate to the minute for a flat horizon at sea level. Mountains, buildings or a high elevation can shift what you actually see by a few minutes, and unusual weather changes the refraction of the air slightly.

Is my location sent anywhere?

No. Sunrise and sunset are calculated in your browser. The last location you use is stored only on your device, so it is ready next time.
