Where this tide comes from
Kapaau has no station of its own, so we use the tide at Mahukona (NOAA), 7.3 mi away. On the open coast the difference is usually a few minutes and inches; inside estuaries, rivers and enclosed bays it can be much larger. It is a NOAA subordinate station: its times and heights come from the Hilo reference station with the official corrections.

Cross-shore wind. The coast faces north and the wind blows along the shore: drift and current run parallel to the beach.
