What is the tide coefficient?
2026 extremes: the highest tide of the year is on December 23 (5.1 ft) and the lowest, on May 18 (-1.8 ft).
Mixed, mainly diurnal: on many days there is only one high and one low tide.
Heights above mean lower low water (MLLW), the zero of US nautical charts. Astronomical prediction: wind and air pressure can raise or lower the water by a few inches, and more in a storm. Not for navigation. MLLW
Tide coefficient and range in October
The biggest tides of the month come from October 28 to 29 (coefficient 115, 5.0 ft range). The smallest, on October 8 (coefficient 20, 2.4 ft).

Where this tide comes from
Dutch Harbor has no station of its own, so we use the tide at Dutch Harbor (NOAA), 0.2 mi away. On the open coast the difference is usually a few minutes and inches; inside estuaries, rivers and enclosed bays it can be much larger. It is a NOAA subordinate station: its times and heights come from the Unalaska reference station with the official corrections.

Wind on the coast and offshore
Cross-onshore wind. The coast faces north and the wind comes in from the sea at an angle: a bit more surf at the shore and drift along the coast, toward land.

Waves build over the next few days. The biggest waves arrive on Saturday 31: 7.1 ft with a period of 6 s, from the north-northwest (moderate).

- Shore fishing. 33 ft of water just 0.3 mi from shore: a good cast reaches deep water. Current and surf hit harder here.
- Swimming. The water gets deeper little by little, but a few dozen yards out you can no longer stand.
- Diving. Shore diving works here: 33 ft at 0.3 mi and 66 ft at 0.4 mi from shore.
Rough estimate: here the data comes in cells of about 0.3 mi and misses details near shore (rocks, sandbars, small coves).
