Where this tide comes from
Sa’asa’ai has no station of its own, so we use the tide at Asau Harbor (NOAA), 31 mi away. On the open coast the difference is usually a few minutes and inches; inside estuaries, rivers and enclosed bays it can be much larger. It is a NOAA subordinate station: its times and heights come from the Apia (Observatory) reference station with the official corrections.

One wave in seven is higher than the significant height, and about 3 times a day one reaches 9.0 ft. Before heading out, expect waves of up to 9.0 ft.
Wind on the coast and offshore
Cross-onshore wind. The coast faces northeast and the wind comes in from the sea at an angle: a bit more surf at the shore and drift along the coast, toward land.

Waves stay much the same all week. The biggest waves arrive on Thursday 29: 5.0 ft with a period of 7 s, from the east-southeast (moderate).

For fishing, swimming and diving
- Shore fishing. Shallow, gradual bottom (16 ft at 1,150 ft): cast far from the beach and fish the high tide, when there is more water close in.
- Swimming. A very gentle way in with plenty of shallow water, good for kids. At low tide the water can be far out.
- Diving. Shore diving works here: 33 ft at 0.35 mi and 66 ft at 0.65 mi from shore.
Rough estimate: here the data comes in cells of about 0.3 mi and misses details near shore (rocks, sandbars, small coves).
