2024 full moons and their names

The year's 12 full moons with their traditional names, their distance from Earth and whether they are a supermoon, micromoon or blue moon.

DateNameDistance
Thursday, January 25 5:55 pm Wolf Moon 249,161 mi
Saturday, February 24 12:31 pm Snow Moon micromoon 252,219 mi

Thursday, October 17 11:27 am Hunter's Moon supermoon 222,051 mi
Friday, November 15 9:29 pm Beaver Moon supermoon 224,851 mi
Sunday, December 15 9:02 am Cold Moon 230,150 mi

The names are the traditional North American ones, which follow the Northern Hemisphere seasons. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, and the Hunter's Moon is the next one.

We call it a supermoon when a full moon falls within about a day and a half of a perigee (the point of the orbit closest to Earth) under 225,000 miles (362,000 km): it looks slightly bigger and brighter. That's a strict definition, since there is no official one and every list uses its own. Under the broader 90% rule that NASA uses (a full moon at least 90% of the way to perigee), 2024 has the same ones. A micromoon is the opposite: near an apogee beyond 251,700 miles (405,000 km). Why lists count differently

A blue moon is the second full moon in the same calendar month (using UTC dates). It doesn't change color.

2024 lunar perigee and apogee

The moon's orbit isn't a circle: every month it passes a point closest to Earth (perigee) and a point farthest away (apogee).

A lunar eclipse can be seen from the whole half of the Earth where the moon is above the horizon; a solar eclipse only from part of the planet. A penumbral eclipse barely dims the moon and is hard to notice.

Never look directly at the sun, with the naked eye or through binoculars, even during a partial eclipse: use certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2).

Best fishing days in 2024 by the moon

According to solunar theory, fish feed more on the days around the new moon and the full moon: about three or four days each time. These are those days for every month of the year (by the phase at 12:00 UTC; in your time zone it can shift by a day).

The times of the major and minor periods depend on the place: the solunar calendar gives them for your beach or harbor, with an extra point on days when they line up with sunrise or sunset.

The biggest spring tides of the year

New and full moons bring spring tides; when the moon is also near perigee, they're the biggest of the year (perigean spring tides, or king tides). They arrive one or two days after the phase.

  • Friday, February 9 New moon, with perigee at 222,500 mi
  • Sunday, March 10 New moon, with perigee at 221,758 mi
  • Monday, April 8 New moon, with perigee at 222,973 mi
  • Monday, August 19 Full moon, with perigee at 223,809 mi
  • Wednesday, September 18 Full moon, with perigee at 222,001 mi
  • Thursday, October 17 Full moon, with perigee at 221,932 mi
  • Friday, November 15 Full moon, with perigee at 223,755 mi

What time does the moon rise and set?

It depends a lot on where you are: two cities in the same country can be more than an hour apart. That's why it isn't here. Look it up on the moon page for your beach, harbor or town, with local times, solunar periods and the phase for each day.
